Jay, I can live with a little "reconciliation"...

Taiwan President-Elect Woos China

dailynews.yahoo.com

By Andrew Browne

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Risking Beijing's fury, Taiwan voters on Saturday elected as president the leader of a pro-independence party, but Chen Shui-bian offered immediately to make a journey of reconciliation to the mainland.

I think if the Taiwanese felt that the recent threats from China were real and would be acted upon that election would have gone differently. Also, articles I have read recently indicate that the DPP did not place independence as a centerpiece of the platform. The Chinese drew attention to this by their threat of intervention. I think Chen will be cautious in any statements regarding independence and that the current tensions will mellow a bit in the next few weeks to months now that there is a conclusion to the election. Each side must rethink their approach.

The uncertainty was the real bugaboo as far as the US markets were concerned.
