Re: Asian Broadband Stats- Cable Modem Subscribers

Thread- Linked to this post(who wrote) are stats for DSL rollouts in Korea. Just recently I found the article below about DSL broadband access competitor, the cable modem.

It's still rare for me to stumble across broadband stats for Asia, but this certainly doesn't mean it's not for real. I saw more Internet cafes in Thailand, than I've seen anywhere else in the world. So our lack of Asia Internet access articles is probably just due to our general lack of financial press coverage concerning anything outside of North America.

IMO, Asia is still a somewhat hidden asset for Cisco. CSCO has spent a long time cultivating that market and if broadband access rolls out as planned, they should benefit handsomely. I'll try to dig up the Asia revenues for CSCO in it's most recent quarter(00Q3)....well no luck. and unfortunately I can't even find a CC replay. That's where they usually breakout revenues by region.

Anyhow, it's a stat I look for to verify growth in Asia is for real. Last quarter(00Q2) CSCO reported it was $392 million. And this was ex-Japan. Including Japan, CSCO did $566 million(!). If anyone else has the Q3 figures, they would be appreciated. -MikeM(From Florida)

PS Please note. I have no idea if CSCO is directly linked to the cable modem rollouts below. I was just making general comments above about CSCO's Asia strategy.

Asian ISPs See Cable Modem Subscriber Growth

Korea Thrunet Co. Ltd., Korea's largest broadband ISP, said it counted 231,014 cable modem customers at the end of March 2000, thanks to a gain of 44,477 subscribers in the month of March alone.

Taiwanese broadband ISP GigaMedia said it finished the first quarter with 18,630 cable modem subscribers.
