Protestants yes, from the Anglo-Irish elite, but not necessarily of English descent (or of purely English descent).

And the real question is -- with whom did they identify? Can you imagine Yeats identifying himself with the Orangists (from some of whom he was descended)?

Take Seamus Heaney, the most recent Irishman to win a Nobel Prize. He, too, is a Protestant, from Northern Ireland. But as Irish as they come, nevertheless.
