1. Yes, GHWB did say it about Quayle. Of course, Bush now admits he made a mistake, but it was a remarkable lapse in judgement at the time. James Baker had strongly opposed selecting Quayle--Bush ignored Baker on this one, to his regret. After Quayle was unveiled, Baker was fuming, muttering to people "it wasn't MY choice". Baker was no dummy.

2. McCain is not a phony. It is true that the reform issue per se is not McCain's biggest draw--people just LIKE him--but that doesn't make him a phony. (No reply needed, I know where you stand.)

3. I don't like Al Gore either.
