I'm thinking of something more offline and something that would not require the commitment level required of reading a whole book.

I understand your point but my impression is that the Reader's Digest version would only give people enough information to make them dangerous. My suggestion instead is that you take a few minutes to type the information into a word processor that appears on the front and back flaps of the manual's cover. Print it or e-mail it to your friend. If that, especially the opening line about a $10,000 investment in Cisco ten years ago being worth nearly $4 million today, doesn't give your friend a reason to read the book ... nothing will.

the FAQ + page 193 of RFM ? just 2 pages....enough to incent someone to get started on *understanding not just reading* RFM (me included!)
