It seems to me that it is first necessary for Dell to do a lot of damage to Dell, and it also seems to me that Dell is doing a lot of damage to Dell. Sort of a "we're all our own worst enemy" thing. By limiting its supplier choices to Intel, Dell has effectively tied the fate of its core business with Intel's at least for the present. I recently read somewhere that during the last three(???) years, Dell had earned $2.5 billion from operations and $3.5 billion from trading options in their own stock. The point of the information I read was while insider trading is banned by the SEC it's not illegal for the board of directors of a company to trade its own options! It appears that both Dell and Intel have been willing to neglect their core business and supplement their earnings with "other income". Competitors can and will do a lot of damage when established companies lose focus on their core business. One point I'd like to make is in Dell's case for damage to occur, two things must happen: (1) Dell had to first willingly lose core business focus (become its own worst enemy). (2) Gateway and Compaq must keep focused and grab the newly available market share. A second point I'd like to make is in Intel's case for damage to occur, two things must happen: (1) Intel had to first willingly lose core business focus (become its own worst enemy). (2) AMD must keep focused and grab the newly available market share. I'm convinced Intel has lost focus on its core business, how else can it be that AMD has the Athlon and Intel does not? What's wrong with all those Intel chipsets that are flawed? What's all this with the RamBus joke and distraction? Why is it Intel is trying to fight a war with the old bandaged and patched PeeWee3? I'm also convinced that AMD has retained "laser like" focus on its core business for several years. Now that Intel has become its own worst enemy, AMD is poised to do extreme damage.
