Interesting discussion of ETEK/JDSU proposed merger om JDSU board last PM. With increase in the arbitrage spread is the deal in trouble with the Justice Dept? Anyone? If it is what will be effect on JDSU price? With regard to ETEK, the posts from last PM would seem to me to raise red flags. Altho conjecture at this point a DOJ roadblock shouldn't shock anyone. I mentioned this issue many posts ago when the idea of JDSU also buying SDLI was raised.

steve...glw growth...how much hi-tech, how much smokestack?

corning a great company, but why do analysts and most of the market see it as a high tech company, when the bulk of the revenues come from an old established smokestack industry?

major profit component is from the manufacture of optical glass fiber....which is far from hi-tech....pure smokestack......

photonics business is small compared to the core glass business....

and what if the japanese (mitsubishi rayon, hitachi, furakawa, asahi) are able to get increased transmission distance from pof (plastic optical fiber), can be serious competition to both corning and lucent...?

between jdsu and glw, you may find going forward that glw is overvalued, when it is discovered that it is not a real high tech company....no different then valuing dupont as high tech, because most fiber optic cable using corning glass fiber is sheathed with a dupont product......

of course no one knows if jdsu can grow earnings 20 fold again. however, according to value line's projection, jdsu will earn 1.50 by about fiscal 2003 which is twenty five times the six cents earned in fiscal 1997.
