saukriver,

I have been unable to find a reference that would point us to the highest market cap in prior years. A search in Metacrawler for the phrase "market capitalization" did bring up a fun site, worth five minutes of browsing:

quuxuum.org

The best tidbit: if Bill Gates' current net worth were in Turkish Lira, he now has 45.23 quadrillion.

If memory serves correct, back in 1991 IBM and Exxon were battling it out for top market cap, at about $75 Bn each.

Best,
