Brian, res- <<Now you know it: I'm a train-freak! <g>>>

No, I would say you're a control freak. You believe that individual Americans making individual choices regarding their transportation and living arrangements are wrong. And that a master plan controlling where people live and how they get around is superior and should be enforced by law. Furthermore, the ones who disagree with me should be punished financially, to whatever level it takes in order to get them to agree with me.

To believe you can design a system superior to the free market system of transportation, which is better adaptive to the changing flowing dynamics of societal needs is dangerous nonsense.

The reason Americans drive cars instead of trains is because they enjoy the freedom and pleasure of driving. Cars meet their needs better then trains. The reason people buy SUV's is because it gives them value. Some the reasons are; they're safe, have lots of room for groceries and the kids. Much like the station wagon did years ago.

America is a HUGE nation compared to Switzerland. Using them as a benchmark to understand our transportational needs is nonsense.

We should open up more areas of Alaska and find environmentally safe ways to harvest the oil off the California coast. Eventually, another form of energy will replace oil. What that will be should be up to market forces to decide. Not some bureaucrat with their grand master plan.

Michael
