SUV's may be safe for the people driving them (actually the safety benefits of the heavy weight are offset by the higher rollover rate) but they are killers for the people who drive normal weight cars and get hit by them.

You can thank the looney government mandated CAFE fuel requirements for killing off larger, comfortable, safe cars and station wagons and replacing them with little tin cans that few people want. Of course people turned to truck based SUVs. As far as pollution is concerned, new cars (and trucks and SUVs) run 98 to 99% cleaner than pre '68 vehicles. And the safety benefits of SUVs far outweigh the minuscule amount of rollover incidents. And, do you see even a small correlation between the relatively cheaper price of fossil fuels in this country and the economic prosperity we're experiencing? Not to mention the freedom of mobility that we enjoy, all of us, from rich to poor.
