I don't doubt that things have been very ugly in China. But I disagree with many on the best way to end this ugliness. I think many Americans underrate the amount of change that has taken place in China over the last ten years, not in the realm of overt policy or treatment of dissidents but in ordinary street-level life. Freedom of movement and access to information have improved immensely. There are infinitely greater opportunities for business and economic advancement. It is in our interest to see these trends continue, and to avoid giving the old ideologues an excuse to crack down. It is also worth noting that change in the top ranks of China's leadership is inevitable. In a decade most of the current leaders will be dead, and the generation that will succeed them is far more pragmatic and far less xenophobic than their predecessors.
