To all;
I believe that a useful analogy can be made between the free publicly available sources of gene sequences vs. the gene sequences discovered by private companies by considering what happens with US census data. These data are collected every 10 years by the US census bureau and are essentially free to anyone who wants to pay the cost of reproducing and mailing them. Nonetheless, there are alot of for-profit companies who repackage the same data and sell it at a higher price to companies who prefer the repackaged census data for marketing purposes. The repackaged is easier to use, may contain supplemental information, or have other features that cause companies to purchase at higher prices than those charged by the census bureau. We can expect the private genomics companies to engage in a similar process and make money in an analogous fashion.
