Hanaro Telecom Awards Contract to Newbridge for the Commercial Deployment of its LMDS Network in Korea
SEOUL, KOREA--KANATA, CANADA--Broadband wireless industry leader Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today announced that it has been awarded by Hanaro Telecom Inc. a U.S. $20 million contract to supply the LMDS (local multipoint distribution service) equipment for Hanaro's first year of broadband services. Hanaro Telecom Inc. is a full-service telecommunications carrier operating in Korea and a license holder for B-WLL service.
Hanaro Telecom, already an important Newbridge customer, has a broadband, multiservice network in several major cities of Korea -- based on the industry leading MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch. The newly deployed LMDS network will be fully consolidated and connected via 155 Mb/s with this installed ATM backbone network.
A trial service will be carried out through April-May this year in a limited area in Seoul before full commercial service becomes available, beginning in June, in residential office buildings and SOHOs (small office home office) in four- or five-story buildings in Seoul. The commercial service of B-WLL will make it possible for smaller buildings and apartments as well as industrial plants which have been excluded from the ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) service to receive broadband high-speed Internet services.
Using the Newbridge LMDS solution, Hanaro will be able to offer its customers broadband services, including leased line and high-speed Internet access via ADSL or Home PNA, and in the future, voice and video services. Also it will dramatically increase the number of subscribers that can economically be connected directly to the voice and data network of Hanaro.
The contract outlines equipment and professional services valued at up to U.S. $20 million for the first phase of the network construction, during which Newbridge will engineer and build data networks in Seoul, followed by build-outs in remaining cities in Korea.
The comprehensive Newbridge broadband wireless solution for LMDS is a multiservice network comprising base station and customer premises equipment (CPE). A base station, consisting of the industry-leading MainStreetXpress 36170 along with point-to-multipoint transmitters and receivers, is the central location that collects all traffic to and from customers within a given wireless coverage area. It is also the linking point between the customer and the network backbone. The CPE includes transceivers and network interface units (NIUs), which support a full range of services. The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager manages both the wireless and wireline portions of the network, providing end to end provisioning, collection of statistics and billing records, and maintenance support.
Sungchan Son, New Technology Development Unit Managing Director of Hanaro Telecom: ``With this new technology from Newbridge, we will be the first in Korea to provide the commercial B-WLL services in a rapid and cost-effective manner, without being hindered by physical connections or agreements with other operators. The prime reason we selected Newbridge is that we already have trained network-operating engineers who are familiar with Newbridge technology and equipment. Furthermore, the modularity and flexibility offered by this Newbridge solution makes it possible to find the right balance between voice communication and the ever-growing importance of data communication, such as the Internet. As an operator, we wish to play a leading role in the provisioning of this service.'
A pioneer in the LMDS market, the Newbridge broadband wireless solution has been selected for commercial deployments and field trials by over 60 customers in the United States, Canada, South America, Asia and Europe.
``Once again Newbridge is demonstrating its leadership in deploying cutting edge technology in Korea as we install the first commercial LMDS systems in the region,' said Ken Park, Managing Director of Newbridge Networks Korea. ``We are very proud of this close partnership with Hanaro Telecom. It reinforces Newbridge as a leading telecommunications supplier of B-WLL solutions as well as ATM backbone platforms that provide end-to-end offerings to new carriers like Hanaro.'
