Macys doesn't tell Gimbels , maybe IBM is like Macys ?

PMFJI but Tony inquired about:
"The Power4 was designed as a server chip for very expensive hardware. But IBM executives say the new line might ultimately have a greater impact on personal computing than recently announced 1GHz desktop PC chips from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Intel Corp., which last week announced their new entries"
---

My read is a version (non-server,single processor) of the Power4 will be available for high powered workstations before SUNW , INTC or AMD knows it ;>)

If not a Power4 there is always a PowerPC model of some type that will fit the bill .

My further spec is that the Analysts meeting two weeks ago has fired up the buy-back (bye bye $108.) after burners .

Tony, I wasn't confused about the time frame of the 2 GHZ processor chip and didn't indicate in my post that it was going to be available in the very short term. Why do you have a problem with IBM releasing information on technology which won't ship in the very near future? My personal take on the recent releases from IBM is that they are widening their lead in key technology areas. Copper interconnect, silicon on insulator, etc are fundamental advantages that IBM currently enjoys. When they were announced well ahead of shipment of product, I used the information to reinforce my decision to continue long in the face of bad news re Y2K. IMHO information relative to future capabilities is highly relevant. Scott

Why does IBM persist in talking about their technology innovations when they're still so far down the road, compared with everyone else. Some kind of complex?

Yeah, I think it's the same complex Intel has. You know, you're favorite company thats been talking about Merced for 5 years.

I hate the way things are these days too. But the reality is that so many people are job hopping, and with the internet word spreads so fast, everyone knows what you're working on anyways so you might as well take credit for it.

We lost 2 more people to the new Intel shop in Austin this week as a prime example.
