I agree.....the margins in the cpu business must have been hurting the numbers in their core business.

I believe the accelerated MHz race between AMD and Intel killed Via's CPU market share in the market outside of China. The fact that they decided to use a chinese name for the spin-off, indicates to me that its an attempt to use nationalism to preserve and increase its market share in China. What I perceived from todays Via's announcement is that they are slightly increasing their investment in their CPU business, but at the same time giving up on the market outside of China.
