*OT* Richard, political correctness has gotten way way out of hand. Many students can't get an A on an English Paper unless they read the work as the teacher reads it. Many students get a math problem marked wrong because they use a different algebraic method than the teacher taught. Creativity is being stymied. Many students can't get into the university of their choice because their moral values are not the values of the School. One university I know of has an essay titled: " The motto of our school is pro humanity. What does that mean to you?" Try answering that question in a way that would please Jerry Falwell and your out of luck. I think you have seen the Left Wing Social backlash over the past 8 years in response to the Republican Platform of Judaic-Christian Moral Values. I think the Political Right has been as guilty as the Political Left. Your man, President Reagan, was the one who brought the Moral Majority into politics. His whole purpose was to get youngsters to believe in that old-fashioned religion and instill respect in Authority in order to squash the dangerous rebellious tendencies that was present in the anti-war movement. My own view is one of Tolerance. By tolerance I don't mean a grudging acceptance of the necessity of supporting diversity. For me tolerance is not only necessary, but something good in and of itself. Religious Faith is essentially a matter of opinion, Richard. Differences of religious opinion should not be a concern of Government. Individuals have a right to choose to believe in anything they wish, or not to believe at all. Need I quote Jefferson here: " It makes no difference to me if my neighbor says there are 20 gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." To the extent that tolerance is viewed as merely a necessity rather than an ideal in the republic, in that sense it contains the seed of conflict- it's very name, "tolerance," implies that a stronger group would put up with the wishes of a weaker ones: that the stronger group ( the Majority) would graciously accept what it deemed potentially intolerable. There is a middle or Tolerant position that can be found between the Political Right and Political Left in this country. Unfortunately, neither Party has a hold on it. That's partly why most Americans stay home and don't vote.
