TUSTIN, Calif., Mar 21, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- PairGain(R)
Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: PAIR), the power behind DSL access(TM),
today announced the industry's first high-speed DSL LAN extension
system for enterprise networks. The system consists of back-to-back DMT
or discrete multitone, Asymmetrical DSL (ADSL) Megabit Modems(R), which
enable enterprise network operators and service providers to deliver a
single high-speed ADSL connection between LAN segments up to several
miles apart. Now, remote access to corporate servers, as well as
Internet and intranet access can be easily and affordably implemented
using DSL.

PairGain's LAN extension system is ideally suited for private campus
networks, such as hospitals and universities, that are looking to
advanced, high-speed technologies to connect their remote networks. The
system includes the Megabit Modem 310F, which functions as the local or
host device, and the Megabit Modem 320F, which operates at the remote
location. DSLAM equipment is not required, so the modem pair is an
especially cost-effective solution for enterprise network operators
looking to utilize ADSL for LAN internetworking. PairGain's LAN
extension system (Megabit Modems 310F/320F) is available now and
carries a United States manufacturer's suggested retail price of $1,
190.

ADSL technology uses the existing copper plant, so no expensive
additional wiring is necessary. Also, by offering a higher downstream
than upstream speed, the system meets users' deman¶Hå?« efficiently
downloading large files. Data transmission is further enhanced through
DMT, an international line-coding standard, whereby the transmission
spectrum is broken down into many individually managed subchannels.

"As the power behind DSL access, PairGain is taking a leading role in
giving more users greater access to the advantages of DSL," said Steve
Robinson, senior vice president at PairGain. "Our new LAN extension
system satisfies the price/performance requirements of both campus
users and service providers, extending the benefits of DSL to more
PairGain users."

The Megabit Modem pair supports downstream speeds in excess of 7 Mbps
and upstream rates up to 928 Kbps. An attainable reach of up to 27,000
feet is possible, depending on the condition of the copper loop. The
solution also incorporates a high-performance Ethernet bridging
function that simplifies network management by dynamically learning up
to 8,192 addresses. Both modems are fully compliant with the ANSI
T1.413 standard.

PairGain Technologies, Inc. PairGain is the leader in the design,
manufacture, marketing and sale of DSL networking systems. Service
providers and private network operators worldwide use PairGain's
products to deploy DSL-based services such as high-speed Internet
access, remote LAN access and enterprise LAN extension. On February 23,
2000 PairGain announced that it and ADC Telecommunications (Nasdaq:
ADCT) had reached an agreement for the acquisition of PairGain by ADC.

For more than 10 years, PairGain has been recognized as a technology
leader and industry innovator of telecommunications equipment. The
Company offers the widest range of DSL-based systems available. Product

Regarding the relationship between ADCT and RBAK -
According to a US Bancorp Piper Jaffrey report that issues a Strong Buy on RBAK dated 1/27/2000, it is stated that the CEO and President of Siara (which is being acquired by RBAK) Vivek Ragavan is a former Senior VP of ADCT. Perhaps this relationship lead to the ADCT/RBAK partnership. I wonder if RBAK is thinking of acquiring ADCT because their stock is red hot and ADCT is still relatively cheap. It appears to me to be a real good fit and the PAIR assets could be leveraged to the hilt.
