I know what you're saying, it would be silly to think IE must be used to register an e-book specifically. Wondering only one thing, deep in that agreement to incorporate GMST technology into Win98, was there a clause to use IE as the specific (if not default) browser?

I have to imagine the negeotiations were not an easy push-over for GMST, and MSFT is not prone to fully concede without trying to angle in in some fashion or another.

A quick report from the field would be appreciated from anyone that has registered an e-book using Netscape browser.
More likely, I imagine the firewall has blocked the information from getting to the e-book device. Without knowing the specifics of how the e-book retrieves the code (protocol, port, program method, etc), it's hard to know for sure.

That was pretty well said by the way, the analogy is quite accurate. In turning your fiercest critic (enemy, foe, whatever, etc.) into an ally, you sway the tide in your favor, as well as sway the emotions of those watching the battle from the sidelines.

But, I'm a skeptic when it comes to MSFT, I've never known favors to come without a price, ask IBM, Apple, Stac, the list goes on and on, the tune is always the same. I hope I'm wrong, my goodness gracious I hope I'm wrong, for so many reasons.

Regards, JB

Stew,
I got the standard Rocket ebook with the specific plan to use it when travelling. Here is the proble.

In order to download books the Reader must be registered. NuvoMedia has a web site where you accomplish this. My problem is that the registration software requires that Explorer be installed on the computer. The Explorer browser does not appear to be used during registration since NuvoMedia appears to have its own browser that loads as a result of installing the Rocket Book software.

I have both Netscape and Explorer on my computer but use a Proxy Server when I use Explorer (It goes through my company's server which is behind a firewall.) So, it appears that Explorer cannot be accessed properly so I cannot register-- so, I cannot download books.

I will try technical support again today. I'll let you all know. Maybe my problem is unique and inconsequential to the mass distribution of the device.

Len

I registered my ebook using IE, but here is what the help command says about what you need, and that you should be able to use Netscape. Apparently, the Rocket software uses some components from IE, and if you don't have those installed you don't get full functionality; however, you can also download those components from their web site. Not sure what those components are. BTW, recall that Gemstar has a deal with AOL, and Netscape is part of AOL now, so I doubt if they would make anything that was impossible to use with Netscape, at least in the longer term:

What You Need
Your PC must satisfy the following requirements to work with the Rocket eBook:

PC with Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT (version 4.0 or greater)
Minimum 16 MB of RAM recommended
At least 10 MB of available hard disk space
An Internet connection
A Web browser such as Netscape© Navigator or Internet Explorer
NOTE: Even if you use a browser other than Internet Explorer, it is highly recommended that you install Internet Explorer (version 4.0 or greater) on your PC.

Doing this ensures that some required software components are available to the RocketLibrarian's browser. You can still use the Web browser of your choice; the files simply need to be present on your computer to make the RocketLibrarian fully functional. If you prefer not to install Internet Explorer, you can download required files from the www.rocket-ebook.com Web site under Rocket Support.

One available 9-pin serial port in addition to the Internet connection
If your serial port is a 25-pin instead of 9-pin, you'll need to purchase a 25-pin to 9-pin adapter (available on the www.rocket-ebook.com Web site, or from your local computer store). If your PC has a USB port and you choose to use that for your Rocket eBook connection, you'll need to purchase a USB-to-serial adapter.
