PC Sales Remain Brisk, Spring Campaign to Accelerate
March 21, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Sales of PCs in Japan in the fourth week of February increased by double digits compared with the previous week.

PC sales dropped in the third week of February compared with the second week, but they rebounded in the fourth week, indicating that sales at retail outlets have not lost momentum.

According to figures compiled by GfK Japan Ltd., the number of PC units sold during the fourth week (Feb. 21-27, 2000) increased 13.8 percent compared with the previous week, with the sales value rising 12.5 percent.

GfK Japan is an information service company handling POS data for 2,000 outlets owned by 42 retail chains that sell home electric appliances.

On a year-on-year basis, sales of PC units surged by 97.5 percent and revenues soared by 73.7 percent over the same week last year (Feb. 22-28, 1999).

The average retail price of a PC in the fourth week of February dropped by 2,294 yen from 205,256 yen in the previous week to 202,962 yen. (105.30 yen = US$1)

The peak of the spring sales campaign usually comes in the final week of March, just before college graduates begin their jobs and a new school year starts. In 1999, the best performance of spring sales showed a 33.3 percent increase compared with the fourth week of February. Similarly in 1998, the former marked a 36.8 percent increase over the latter.

Based on the assumption that the sales in the final week of March this year will also increase by 30 percent from those in the fourth week of February, PC sales units and revenues will break the record highs set in the second week of January this year (Jan. 3-9, 2000).

This year's spring sales campaign is likely to be more buoyant than those of past years.

GfK Japan collects POS data from 42 IT-related chains centering on high-volume stores specializing in home electric appliances. It covers about 3,200 stores (as of October 1999) throughout Japan. In cooperation with GfK Japan, Nikkei Market Access provides weekly reports of PC sales in volume and value.

The sales data has been based on the same 32 store chains (with about 2,000 outlets) since April 1996. The number of PCs sold at the 2,000 outlets is estimated to comprise about 10 percent of gross domestic shipments, and to form a 25 percent share on the retail sales channel market.

Note: Nikkei Market Access changed the way it counts the numbers for the week. Up until the previous report, the number of the week was set according to Mondays, i.e., if a week starts from the fifth Monday of the month, the week is counted as the fifth week. Instead, from this report, the week, including the first day of that month, is to be counted as of the first week of that month.

I bet you are one happy short tonight! I was impressed with your posting this morning. You sounded a little bit like old fella Patrick K. who was pretty good in reading MU.
