Hitachi, Taiwan's UMC Set Up Chip-Making JV As Planned

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Hitachi Ltd. (HIT or 6501) and United Microelectronics Corp. (Q.UME) of Taiwan said Tuesday that they have set up a chip-manufacturing joint venture in Japan.
The two high-technology companies agreed last year to form an alliance to produce next-generation wafers and large-scale integrated circuits for use in digital home electronics.

The joint venture, Trecenti Technologies Inc., is capitalized at Y2.5 billion. Hitachi holds a 60% share in the company and UMC has 40%. The company's capital will be boosted to Y30 billion by the end of 2000, they said.

Starting in April 2001, Trecenti Technologies will manufacture 300-millimeter wafers using technologies of 0.18-micron and beyond. The two companies plan to initially invest about Y70 billion for a production capacity of 7,000 wafers a month. -0- 21/03/00 05-22G
