<<Taking more money from hard working Americans and putting it into your grand 50 year government choo-choo plan is hideous nonsense. Americans of all economic stripes have voted with their pocketbooks. And they prefer the automobile. It's really as simple as that. >> I know you guys stare in disbelief--you think I'm being radical--in one sense I am, totally, but in another sense, financially, not at all. LESS money would be taken, as you would phase out current massive highway building and maintenance spending. You SAVE money. I'm serious. Trains are efficient and wonderful, technologically and aesthetically. The interstate highway system (it's size and extent) and our totally car-dependent culture was a mistake. It's just a matter of where you want your taxes spent, not if they will be spent. You discount what you spend on cars and you also don't see the auto the way I do--the deleterious effect it has had on our cities and towns, our communities. You guys are not true conservatives, you are 19th century economic liberals. Yes, Americans love their cars and prefer them with their current way of thinking--alcoholics love alcohol too. We need a twelve-step auto recovery plan--autoholics anonymous. Hah! Oh, by the way, why should I be jealous?--I drive a Mercedes Benz--a nice four-cylinder fuel-efficient, clean-running one that will last me a long time; I don't need to go out and buy a new one every three years. I'm very content with my car, and it's a rational investment. I'm not a socialist killjoy, against buying nice things with your hard-earned money--I just think there are mature, environmentally sane ways to have your fun. The people who can afford expensive, gigantosaurus SUV's can also afford to buy a very nice, safe, much smaller, much cleaner driving Volvo or Mercedes or what have you and still be happy as a clam. I'd even say 6 cylinders are OK <g>. And trains are fun! Cordially, "Choo-choo" Brian
