Daffodil, I'm very much with you on the "I'm stressed, I'm going to walk" line of reasoning. We might all be right in that Suzanne was going to meet someone but that someone wasn't necessarily expecting Suzanne, so the visit was more spur of the moment than secret and Suzanne wasn't really telling a white lie when she said she had no plans and was tired. In other words, as you suggest, she might have been going to a place where she expected to find friends but nothing was prearranged.

My very first theory of where Suzanne was going was to the hockey game. Such a walk would take Suzanne past "dead" areas, i.e. places where few people would likely be at that hour. A block prior to the hockey rink is where I was once chased so I can identify with a random attack there. The only problem I have with this scenario is that had Suzanne really been interested in the hockey game she'd most likely have parked the school car there, run in, and driven home. This is not to say she didn't go, just that I'd probably ascribe a higher probability to her walking to a party where she thought she might know people.

As for meeting up with Jim at the hockey game, recall that Jim was there briefly at around 8:05 or so and just stayed for a few minutes right near the door. Suzanne was seen all the way near Phelps Gate at around 9:30pm. We're talking roughly an hour and a half difference.
