You're the ones who had it easy, just being able to say what you wanted to without having to back it up. I had Jacob Klein for freshman seminar leader. He was loving, but as tough as nails when it came to questioning positions and posing, in that gentle, halting voice of his, questions which made you realize how incredibly little you actually knew and how much there was to know that you had never conceived of, but also, in trying to answer them, made you realize, too, that you could actually become an intelligent and educated person if you worked hard enough at it. An extraordinary tutor. (I mentioned earlier how we drove his newbie co-seminar leader out of the college. Klein didn't help, but he sure didn't stop us. He knew the guy was a dud, and let us destroy him without interfering.)
