I fail to see why INTC would have pushed RDRAM as they have unless there is some kind of significant benefit sufficient to offsett the much higher cost of the system.

Me too. I was baffled by some Intel press releases a couple years ago which said that CPU's were bandwidth limited. At least one engineering team understood that latency was the key issue, because they put a large low latency L2 cache on board Coppermine. It may be a disconnect between marketing and engineering.
