Silence

The earth just stopped.
The only explanation-
Something so intense , so deafening slaps the other senses into defense.
Silence - pure silence...something I have never heard...
nothing... so uncommon
stepping back alone and listened hard for a tell-tale sign of movement;
hearing only deafening silence except now your ever-rapid beating heart.
No wind, still and quiet...and for a few minutes no life
till that was broken by a flutter of wings...
looking up and surprised to be able to hear that crow so
high which set the world back in motion.
The realization of what once was common - away from the hum
of machinery, electricity and mass- and becoming one with
the earth rooted in the soil,
a rock to observe.

(a few moments in a long-ago summer just-started working on
my uncle's ranch and being left alone after completing the first
few layers of a haystack while my uncle went to get another
load and broke a wheel...Isn't it interesting what a few
minutes shape into many years. Something I always remember.)
