Fed raises federal funds rate by quarter point to 6.00%
New York--Mar 21--The Federal Reserve raised its federal funds target
rate by a quarter percentage point to 6 percent. The widely expected
move is the fifth interest-rate increase in nine months and lifts
overnight interbank borrowing rate to the highest level since 1995. The
Fed also raised its discount rate, the rate in charges commercial banks
for loans, by quarter percentage point to 5.50 percent. (Story .1035)
