Hi Bernard- Thanks for pointing the link to the cool post. I rarely get to the SI home page and would have missed it. Thanks everyone for all the comments about the utility power company solution. I was surprised how many ideas/tests there are. I'm coming to the conclusion that a big part of the reason the power utility companies have not taken advantage of their incredible positioning is the same reason the RBOCs hadn't moved for years and years on broadband. Why should they when they have a lock on their business. No competition. No risks. It's too bad. Think how much of an advantage they have over an old railroad company(Qwest) and old gas companies(Enron/Williams). The electrical powerplant is substantially more pervasive. And most important, completes the last mile circuit. Yet it's potential goes virtually untapped. And I suppose as some have pointed out, ownership is pretty fragmented. So the red tape to put together a consortium would literally take an act of congress. I suppose there is still hope. But at the rate DSL, HFC, and Fixed Wireless is being rolled out, maybe the opportunity has been lost forever. At least in the United States. Maybe it's time for some DD on foreign based electric power plants. Probably not Europe because I imagine they are having the same regulation/monopoly problems the US may have. But Asia might be an idea. -MikeM(From Florida)
