I'm trying to purchase a high-end server for analytic purposes.

I'm looking for the following in hardware:
4 - 880 MHz Xeon CPUs
8 GB RAM
500 GB disk

I'd really like RDRAM, but 2 GB is $20,000. I have a call in to my Dell rep to see if we can buy 2 GB of RAM now, and expand in 3 months with another 6 GB of RAM when the price drops due to the ramp-up in production.

My rep wasn't even sure the Xeon processors would work with RDRAM.

whine: Why couldn't RDRAM have ramped 6 months ago?

I'm in Data Warehousing / Predictive Technologies at a dot-com. There is great demand for this type of server in our industry, and my server is just for dumb-old metrics on our 10 GB / night of log files. If the RDRAM will make our reports available 4 hours sooner, I'll be under huge pressure to make it happen. My server needs for the really cool predictive stuff are even greater.

I bought my position on Feb 22nd at $135, and got stopped out at $442 last week. Today I re-bought 1/2 my position at $283. I'll set my stops for $232.

You all be careful out there.
