The problem is turning wonderful inventions into revenue! You can have all the patents and lab gear in the world. Then, if you can't produce a competitive product, you are running a Science project.......not a business. I worry that Lucent has been a laboratory experiment funded by the old products for too long.

MM, Thank you for your research on tunable transmitters. I look forward to reading more about Lucent and Nortel developing products in this area. My knowledge of this subject is obviously incomplete. Thank you for your help.

Regards, Ken

Mighty Mizzou: A battle in Fiber is shaping up. In the hardware domain we have the VLEDS, the Modulator, the Amplifier, Couplers, OXC's and the switches.

I understand that besides the Tunable laser, LU has recently
added a graded VLED which can generate upto 20 frequencies on a single silicon wafer thru modifying the doping. Do you have any info on this and the competition.?

NT seems desperate in the field of switching. It has recently bought Companies with capability in 3d MEMs, Crystal Polarisation etc. HWP also has a very cheap micro ink jet bubble based switch to add to the competion. What is the capacity (Cross bar)of the best MEMs crosss switch now on the market.?

I believe that all these switches will be made obsolete with an Ion-implant switch. Do you know what is the state of LU's Ion implant switch.? It should be the fastest after teleporting. It seems likely that like the Router wars, the
Optical switch will decide which Company will dominate.
