Thank goodness for the voice of reason. The data is not out but I know from a good source that Lucent is number one in DSLAM. Just wait for the dataquest numbers.

Mr. Fun, even more interesting to me in the near future will be Wall St.'s attitude toward acquisitions. CSCO, NT, and LU all are highly dependent on acquiring R&D to remain competitive. (CSCO more so than NT, and NT more so than LU.) In the past, all three companies have been able to write off acquired R&D and pass off these write offs as one time expenses. As the Wall St. analysts begin to realize that acquisitions are in the normal course of business, the analysts will no longer subtract these write offs from operating earnings. The process is happening right now.

The stocks will suffer, CSCO more than the others.

based on the whining on this thread.

MF, I didnt expect this from you. Seems uncharacteristic. I was hoping for a simple answer to my P330 series question instead.

The times they are a changin'. Oh well...

Mr Fun: Optical networking WAN/MAN are industries that will have diminishing returns with extended time. A little similar to what happened in the Computer Industry. Light has a finite speed which is the same for all the players and therfore the players need to make the maximum of this wide window of oppurtunity in Fiber.

The dominant player will be one who can offer the most effective total system inclusive of all the passive and active components. Most of the players have fairly standard Modulators,Circulators, OXC's , Couplings and Amplifiers. What distinguishes them are their DWDM capacity
, dispersion limits, thermal stability and ofcourse their switch capacity and error rates.

NT seem to be all over the map when it comes to switches. It would appear that they are attempting to offer the widest selection. I dont see the reason for that specially if the
reliability/error and access times are comparable to each other. Their recent acquisitions appear to be desperate.

There is no doubt that the switch will be the factor that decides who dominates the market. I would be thankful if you or any one else closer to the Industry could give us a sitrep on the various switches now available and the R&D work current in Bell Labs.

Thanks.

Mr.Fun: On what basis do you place Lucent No.2 in wireless infrastructure. My reckoning puts them between 4th and 7th, in no way in the top three and a long way behind.

Agree with the rest though.

Curious,
M
