PNG: Crunch Time For Comalco Over $1.4B Refinery Site
The Courier-Mail, March 22

Comalco indicated on 21 March 2000 it would announce a long-awaited decision on its Gladstone alumina refinery within a fortnight. Comalco managing director Terry Palmer gave no idea of what the final decision would be, but commented that Gladstone was clearly the favoured site over the alternative in Sarawak, Malaysia. The option to select Gladstone has attracted approximately $A250 million in Australian and Queensland government benefits and is expected to be a big catalyst for industrial development in central Queensland, along with the Papua New Guinea-to-Queensland gas pipeline.

Comalco Puts Date On Refinery Decision
The Australian, March 22

Comalco is evaluating sites for its proposed $1.4 billion alumina refinery. Possibilities include Gladstone in Queensland and a Malaysian site, but the final decision to be made in early April 2000 will depend on the future of the PNG-Brisbane gas pipeline project. Comalco wants to begin the refinery's construction by September and aims to top its $371 million net profit of 1999 by the end of 2000. Hopes of success could be boosted by an expected growth in aluminium demand of around five per cent, which should keep alumina prices booming.
