Dell seeking Japanese IT opportunities

Dell Computer Corp. (DELL: news, msgs), like Sun Microsystems Inc.(SUNW: news, msgs) and Oracle Corp. (ORCL: news, msgs), is getting into the business of investing in Japanese start-ups. But in Dell's case, the company is going to let its Japanese subsidiary call most of the shots as far as investment candidates go.

The computer maker plans to set up a division at Dell Computer KK in April to invest in information technology start-ups, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported. Not only will it be targeting capital gains when the firms go public, it also aims to incorporate new technologies into Dell products.

The new division plans to invest initially in 10-to-20 firms, using surplus funds at the parent. Dell Computer KK will take stakes of less than 10 percent in unlisted firms with strong technologies and services in areas such as the Internet, servers and computer memory, the Nihon Keizai said.
