TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Taiwan's economy continued its robust
rebound as February industrial output beat optimistic
market expectations by expanding 18%, compared with the
10.8% growth a year ago.

In addition, the government said Wednesday that export
orders rose 13.5% last month to US$9.83 billion, an
indication that future actual exports will continue a
recent strong growth trend.

"The numbers are a surprise and show the global demand for
Taiwan products," said Chris Chen, an economist with Jih
Sun Securities.

The data were the fifth straight month of double-digit
growth for industrial production and the fourth straight
month for export contracts.

In a Dow Jones survey, seven economists had predicted
February industrial output would rise 11.8%

Industrial output and export orders were expected to rise
sharply due to the low base period a year ago when output
fell 6.3% and export contracts plunged 10% from the
lingering impact of the regional financial crisis and fewer
working days from the week-long Lunar New Year holidays.
