Looking at the chart, ZD IPO'd in April, 1998, at roughly 17, and dropped below 5 by October, 1998. So what seems clever to you screwed the ZD shareholders. ZD is a US corporation, US accounting rules apply. If it transpired as the Economist reports, it's probably a violation of US law, as well. May explain why Softbank doesn't sell ADRs in USA.
