Frank- I was thinking exactly what you posted, but didn't quite know how to work it in. Perfect analogy you made regarding 9.6kb/s and I fully agree.

The utility company real estate(RoW) is there. Since these power companies may have missed the first boat, it certainly doesn't mean they won't be able to catch the all fiber optic(FTTH) boat coming up next. My guess is that it's at least 5 years out before it begins to rollout. But that is how long it would probably take just to put together a consortium for a substantial backbone/last mile connection.<g>

Maybe with deregulation kicking in the electric power space, it will have unforeseen consequences such as we are discussing. -MikeM(From Florida)
