IDC (India): 7.5 million Indian Netizens by '03

[March 22, 2000] Internet subscriber base in India will blossom almost 100 percent in 2000, with the userbase crossing the one million mark by year-end, says IDC (India).

The surveying firm is an affiliate of the US-based International Data Corporation (IDC), which conducts IT market research and consultancy. By 2003, the Indian subscriber base is expected to cross the 7.5-million mark, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 95 percent.

IDC (India) attributes the 95 percent projected CAGR to increasing Net penetration of the home segment, which currently accounts for 20 percent of the total subscriber base with the commercial segment taking the lion's share.

The home segment is expected to grow at a faster rate than the commercial segment in the years to come--IDC (India) predicts that the home segment will account for 67 percent of the total India Net base in 2003 by sustaining a 163 percent growth.

A few ISPs have already announced unlimited Internet access packages and IDC (India) says that a majority of ISPs will follow suit by year-end, with the further expectation that all major ISPs will offer Internet access in mass customized packages by end-2002.

Internet access via cable is also expected to witness healthy growth during the coming years. By end-2001, cable-delivered Net access is expected to be available in Indian cities and towns with populations of a million or more. Cable modem prices are expected to decline by 30 percent over the same time-frame....
