I took the following from the EMR website.

Coal Flyash

Coal flyash results from the combustion of coal fuel, however current restrictions on nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions have resulted in reduced burner
temperatures with the negative consequence of uncombusted carbon, characterized by Loss On Ingition (LOI), in the flyash.

Flyash is an extremely important component in the cement industry, however the presence of residual organic carbon is a degrading factor. The economic
value of flyash as a cement additive increases dramatically as the carbon content is reduced below 3%.

EMR has demonstrated LOI reduction to below 0.5% in an industrial flyash with 14% original LOI.
