O/T: Oh, whatever. I'm not touting the brand, just the pollution & safety issue. The brand thing came up when someone suggested I was jealous of soccer moms driving SUV's. Sure, Hondas are great cars and very reliable and may well have better reliability stats than the Mercedes. But I'm happy with my choice ("bottom of the line" or not--the smaller ones may be cheaper but they're just as well-built). It's superbly designed and this particular one has been superbly reliable, and, in terms of an investment, they hold their resale value better than a Honda. And don't get stolen nearly as often--there isn't the market for fenced parts and if you try to hot wire it the fuel pump shuts off--you have to tow it to steal it. (This is minor, but if it breaks down you call a number and 24-hours-a day they come help you, usually for free, for the life of your car. Actual repair costs depend on the warranty of course. They will change a tire or give you gas if you run dry, for free, for the life of the car. I just had a flat--called the number and presto, the guy came promptly and changed the tire and that was that. For you and me that's not a big deal but for some women and elderly....) In general, I am biased towards putting more money up front into quality and caring for it and keeping it longer. But others in other situations will make other choices. The point is that both the Honda and my car are reasonably clean and efficient and kind to others in collisions. The SUV is another story altogether.
