MasterPlan: Develop IT for the masses

NEW DELHI -- The minister in charge of India's newly-established Ministry for Information Technology, has set himself the goal of developing IT for the masses.

"I want IT to be used for distance education, for tele-medicine, for good governance. If you ask me what my priority is, it is not e-commerce because e-commerce will take place on its own," Mr Pramod Mahajan said in an interview.

"But if I bring e-governance to this country in 10 years, it will remove the middleman; it will remove corruption; it will bring transparency. E-governance will become synonymous with good governance.

"If I can use e-commerce for my agriculturists or artisans who are in villages and don't know anything about the outside world, then that is IT for the masses....
