Winstar First to Announce Live Network Traffic Running Across Lucent's 80-Channel Optical Networking System
MURRAY HILL, N.J., and NEW YORK, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced that Winstar Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: WCII - news) is using Lucent's 80-channel optical networking system to dramatically increase the capacity on the New York to Washington, D.C., leg of Winstar's national broadband network. Winstar is the first company in North America to announce it has live network traffic running across Lucent's flagship system.

Winstar is using the system -- known as the WaveStar(TM) OLS 400G -- to transmit voice and data traffic over a two-fiber network ring connecting the two cities. With a per-fiber capacity of up to 400 gigabits per second (Gb/s), the WaveStar OLS 400G is capable of transmitting either five million simultaneous phone calls or 12,000 encyclopedia volumes per second.

``Winstar has always offered our customers the highest-capacity, fastest and most reliable networks to meet the rapidly increasing data and Internet needs of their businesses,' said David Ackerman, group executive of Winstar's Network and Systems Services group. ``By integrating Lucent's high-capacity optical networking products with our networks, we can deliver even more cost- effective, high-speed, high-quality service to our customers.'

The WaveStar OLS 400G uses a technology known as dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM). DWDM enables carriers to expand network capacity by simultaneously transmitting multiple wavelengths -- or colors -- of light across a single fiber, with each wavelength carrying a distinct information stream.

``With its ability to deliver virtually limitless capacity at a low cost, optical networking is at the heart of next-generation networks,' said Harry Bosco, group president of Lucent's Optical Networking Group. ``This is one of many commercial deployments this year for our WaveStar OLS 400G. And we're dramatically expanding our manufacturing capacity so we can continue meeting commitments to our customers.'

Lucent's system currently is in service or in trials with more than 40 customers worldwide.
