ESI Receives $3 Million Order for its Laser Drilling Tools From Honeywell's ASTI Business March 28, 2000 04:23 PM Eastern Time PORTLAND, Ore., March 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Electro Scientific Industries Inc. ESIO announced a multiple-unit order for its Model 5200 Laser Drilling systems and system upgrades to Honeywell's Advanced Substrate Technology & Interconnects (ASTI) business. The systems will ship to Honeywell's manufacturing facilities in Costa Mesa, Calif., where they will be used for volume production of advanced semiconductor packaging substrates for the growing telecommunications, consumer products and networking markets. (Photo: newscom.com ) "Honeywell investigated a full range of laser tool technologies to meet our requirements for very small, very accurate holes," said Dick Pommer, Vice President of Research and Development for Honeywell's ASTI business. "ESI's 5200 is the only product that met the cost/performance targets and that has the ability to support ongoing development of our advanced packaging products." "We are pleased with our relationship with Honeywell/ASTI," said Tom Richardson, General Manager of ESI's Advanced Packaging Products. "Honeywell is taking a leadership role in the very advanced packaging substrate market where our products provide enabling capability." ESI's UV laser drilling technology will enable Honeywell/ASTI to drill vias in layered pairs and bond ply material where the smallest via is a 25 um or below allowing Honeywell to increase density while shrinking the package size.
