>>Eisenhower built the interstate highway system

Funny you should mention that. I recently read an article which stated that building the interstate highway system launched the previous economic boom - that of the 1960's.

Like the internet, that system greatly improved the economy's efficiency and expanded economic opportunity.

There are, though, a couple of worthwhile points. First, many people commute into the city, but the major traffic arteries are still clogged during rush hour, because the total need was underestimated 30 years ago. Second, my wife would drive if it did not add on another 30 minutes during rush hour, because the train is out of the way, with no real shelter on the platform, and she has to walk in a crush of people for connections on the Metro, and she has a terminal 10 minute walk to the office. She likes the exercise, but not in all seasons.........

People built suburbs because people preferred them to the crowded ugly central cities. The idea the they were kidnapped by automobiles and driven out into the country against their will is silly.

In part, the very way towns and cities are structured is driven by the tyranny of the car culture.

The solution to congestion is obvious, build communities with less density not more. This sensible solution has been demonized by the elite planning types by calling it sprawl.
