The horribly inefficient railroads lost their business because they were regulated into the dirt and they liked it like that way. They stupidly thought it was a way to ensure profits without having to be competitive. Funny you should bring up railroads. Did you notice that their attempt to reinvent themselves was dealt a serious blow by the Federal government just last week when it declared a "moratorium" on mergers? But the auto/truck companies did their best to buy up and effectively dismantle the wonderfully efficient railroads we had in this country.
