Yes, the alternators come and go. The hood won't stay up either - he has to buy a new gas strut every 2 years.

Radio hasn't worked for years. I can't really understand why he keeps it - it eats money.

You are torquing the belt too tight or you have a bad pulley. Also check your level in your steering fluid.
