Cisco Says Revenue From China
Will Increase by 90% This Year

By MATT FORNEY
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

BEIJING -- Cisco Systems Inc. expects revenue from China to increase 90% this year, and the
company plans to boost sales further by organizing a consulting unit to help Chinese companies
become "Net-ready," according to Peter Solvik, Cisco's chief information officer.

Mr. Solvik said that the 90% growth in revenue that he expects when his company's fiscal year
ends in July roughly equals the rate of growth that Cisco enjoyed in the last fiscal year. He declined
to give specific amounts.

Later this year, Cisco's operation in China will start offering consulting services in China's three
most important commercial cities -- Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Unlike other consulting
companies, however, Cisco will not take charge of putting together networks for its clients.

"We'll help people understand how to change their enterprise," Mr. Solvik said. "That usually
means one person working with senior management for a few days to design a strategy. We'll run
exercises to help those companies get their leadership in place," he said.

Cisco won't charge for the service, but hopes that the companies it consults will buy its products --
things like Internet servers and routers. "If we speed up their ability to reach the Internet, they will
probably need to improve their technology, and we believe they will give Cisco top consideration,"
said Mr. Solvik.

Cisco will begin training possible consultants soon, and expects to hire some from the outside. Mr.
Solvik mentioned employees of A.T. Kearney and Anderson Consulting as possibilities.
