If you know what you own it is really quite easy to do. And the longer you do it, the easier it becomes. The core holding is off limits to trading and option strategies. It is allowed to grow over time.

This in no way prevents one from having trading accounts/funds where options strategies and the like are employed to take advantage of inevitable hills and valley's along the way. In fact you become a better investor. After awhile you know the seasonal patterns, the trading patterns the behavior, the gestalt of the stock better than many analysts.

Holding companies like CSCO INTC MSFT long term while the fundamental story remains intact provides a safe base of operation from which to go after the young fast moving tech and biotech plays.
