United Microelectronics, a computer chip producer and the second-largest company by market value, rose 6.8 percent to NT$109.50. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., a computer chipmaker and the island's largest company by market value, rose 5.7 percent to NT$203.
``From June onwards, we see strengthening demand,' said Gurinder Kalra, head of technology research Asia-Pacific for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. ``On the supply side there isn't much new capacity.'

That increases the value of ALSC's holdings of UMC by about $64.5 million (about $1.50 per share)
