Michael,

I think the point has always been the point that the fellow who asked me to pull hay with my car made inadvertently: these "light trucks," SUVs, whatever you call them, are for the vast majority of people playtoys way, way beyond what they really need, and until recently most people were oblivious to their costs in terms of pollution and safety. Like alcoholism, it's all about cost/benefit and responsibility. I do not begrudge farmers their pickup trucks. The mpg by itself is not a test of someone's commitment to the environment or the safety and well-being of others on the road. Not only am I not "as" hypocritical, I am not hypoocritical, period. And I am not telling folks here who own an SUV to say 25 Hail Mary's and wear sack cloth, only to think about the direction this society should go in and not arrogantly dismiss the idea as a Democratic plot to ruin America.

About taxes, I see no inconsistency or shift on my part, each statement follows logically from the other. One would naturally want to reduce the bloodflow to highway and byway building while also encouraging a shift away from cars and towards mass transit by . g . r . a . d . u . a . l . l . y . increasing gas taxes and using the proceeds wisely on mass transit development. A net tax increase does not follow.

I do worry about you in that Civic, though. It's practically defenseless against some marauding SUV. How about a nice, relatively fuel-efficient Volvo for your next car?
