Ethanol and methanol both contain carbon so you're back to the same problem when it is oxidized. Carbon dioxide in itself is not the villain as it is a necessary ingredient in the life of photosynthetic plants. Unfortunately too much of the Earth's forests have been stripped away and the ability to absorb carbon dioxide into the cycle has been reduced.
