PSINet sets $1 bln Internet venture program
HERNDON, Va., Feb 23 (Reuters) - PSINet Inc. (NasdaqNM:PSIX - news) said Wednesday it is creating a $1 billion corporate venture program to support Internet entrepreneurs.

The Internet carrier said funding for the effort, called PSINet Ventures, will include the value of its current investments in Internet technology and the value of Internet services to be exchanged for equity in new ventures as well as $100 million in cash.

PSINet Venture's Leapfrog Program will be the first ``dot-com' start-up program that uses a ``services for equity' investment model, the company said. This structure establishes a line of credit for a start-up dot-com company to purchase any PSINet service in exchange for equity rather than cash.

The Leapfrog Program is designed to give start-ups the flexibility they need to build their businesses and realize their financial goals.

PSINet Ventures will partner with Internet entrepreneurs through direct minority equity investments during early- and mid-stage financing, focusing on emerging opportunities that enhance PSINet's financial and competitive technology and service positions, the company said.

PSINet said its existing portfolio includes investments in public companies with a value of over $154 million, adding it includes such firms as Akamai Technologies Inc. (NasdaqNM:AKAM - news), F5 Networks Inc. (NasdaqNM:FFIV - news), FLAG Telecom Holdings Ltd. (NasdaqNM:FTHL - news), Metrocall Inc. (NasdaqSC:MCLL - news), Mpath Interactive Inc., or HearMe (NasdaqNM:HEAR - news), Software.com Inc. (NasdaqNM:SWCM - news), WatchGuard Technologies Inc. (NasdaqNM:WGRD - news) and Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news), as a result of Lucent's November purchase of Xedia Corp.

In addition, the portfolio includes investments in several private companies.
